In 1869 Ecuador has now been free from other’s control learning how to be their own country for about three decades now. Throughout the years they came out with four different versions of constitutions with updates throughout the years making certain things requirements. Such as in the 1869 Constitution there was one major change in the requirements to be considered a citizen of Ecuador. There was now an added requirement that all citizens must be Roman Catholic to be a citizen of Ecuador. This change was made under Qualification 3 (Título 3), Article 3 (Artículo 3) being the first requirement of being a citizen. This change came from Gabriel Garcia Moreno who was in power at the time and known for his immense devotion to Catholicism.
This showed how Ecuador was trying to progress to make improvements to their country and be independent on their own. However due to the influence that was made from the colonization and takeover of the country by Spain and the Spaniards. Believing and wanting to spread their religion and want to convert those to Catholicism for people to be their best selves(Chasteen). This showed the impact that the Spaniards had on the people of Ecuador before becoming an independent country. Such as Gabriel Moreno who was a devoted Catholic and he saw the importance of trying to continue the influence of Catholicism and saw the opportunity in trying to progress and be an independent country but yet still continue to push these views from the conquerors.
