In 1898 the United States came to invade Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico was one of Spain’s two prize possession during that time. On July 25th, 1898 16,000 troops invaded Puerto Rico at Guernica. But will little resistance and only seven deaths, Troops under General Nelson A. Miles were able to win the island by mid-August. Soon after American troops raised the United States flag over the island. Soon after in December the Treaty of Paris was signed and ended the Spanish-American War. Soon after the United States made an effort to make the Puerto Rician soil one of their own. Then in 1917 the Puerto Ricans became United States citizens. But that’s all they got. They weren’t allowed to vote for the president and was thought to have lack of knowledge of the presidential race. They were also not allowed to be represented in the United States Congress right away. Till this day Puerto Rico is still a part of the United States just not a state.
